One of my favorite blogs to follow is Frugal Upstate. It's a great blog, and she really comes up with some great ideas! One of the best things I love is her morning "Lunchbox Reports"... where she posts a pic on Facebook of the great lunches she makes her kids.
I'm a bit jealous of that.
Her lunches are affordable, healthy and full of variety! Her kids truly eat well. My kids? Well.... Chance insists of eating at the cafeteria like everyone else. It's just what he's used to. And my Little Bryan? Well, I have made his lunch everyday since they told me I could, but for other reasons than frugality or nutrition. He has CERTAIN THINGS HE LIKES.
When you have a kid with sensory issues... feeding them is a challenge. It's the Picky Kid syndrome amplified, it seems! I've been moaning about this for some time now, but now I'm thinking of it a different way.
1. Concentrate on what he WILL eat. And then work off from that. No, I can't get him to sit down and eat broccoli. BUT, he will eat corn. What can I do to introduce a new vegetable that goes off from that? Corn and carrots? The ideas start coming and we try what we come up with.
2. Also, concentrate on making what he will eat the BEST it can be. Take a food he likes pre made and make a homemade, healthier version. Or, like in today's lunch. Little Bryan loves hot dogs. (No bun, please.) Instead of buying the cheap versions, I buy all beef ones. While they're more expensive... they're a lot healthier than the cheap ones. And, considering the price, I'm not feeding him hot dogs often! So it all evens out in my mind.
Also I've read that children with a magnesium deficiency can't stand the smells or tastes of certain foods (read in "What's Eating Your Child" by Kelly Dorfman, MS, LND). I believe it's best to get your vitamins and minerals through the foods you eat. So I encourage him to eat bananas, dried fruits and nuts as much as possible. Since starting this, he did have his corn breakthrough!
So, without further ado... here is my first Lunchbox Report ever. While it might not seem like much, a lot of thought went in to it! And I won't be doing this every day... the repetition would kill ya. ;)
Two all beef hot dogs, banana, and snack mix consisting of raisins, dried apricots and off brand fishy crackers (they're Whales... LOL). For a treat there's also a couple of puffy peppermints (our favorite kind).
I'll do more Lunchbox Reports as the lunches evolve and progress. :)
